The Partnership with the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (Germany)

The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) is one of Germany's top technical universities and a leading strategic partner of the University ofUniversité Grenoble Alpes (UGA).
The partnership is based on close scientific cooperation and the establishment of programs of excellence that support researcher visits.

More than a hundred French and German students benefit from this partnership each year, and several doctoral dissertations and postdoctoral positions have been funded in the joint laboratories. This partnership is part of UGA’s activities within the Franco-German University (UFA), which supports several integrated degree programs between the two universities.

General Framework

KIT and UGA have agreed on a joint action plan to support the activities of four working groups focused on two themes:
  • Artificial Intelligence.
  • Energy: batteries, hydrogen, energy system design.
A strategic committee was also established to oversee the strategic partnership and define its priorities and resources.

Key Figures

  • 155 scientific articles co-authored since 2019.
  • 134 outbound exchanges and 164 inbound exchanges since 2016.
  • Four joint thesis advisories have been established since 2018, one of which was defended in December 2021.

In the field of education

There are four dual-degree programs, accredited and financially supported by the Franco-German University:
  • In physics with PhITEM, UGA.
  • Computer Science at Grenoble INP - Ensimag, UGA.
  • In Industrial Engineering and Economics at Grenoble INP and UGA.
  • Electrical Engineering with Grenoble INP – Phelma, UGA.

In the field of research

A very active scientific cooperation, involves numerous UGA laboratories: Collaboration is strengthening and expanding within the framework of the UGA-KIT-CEA working groups.

Some projects with national research organizations:
  • The international research laboratory Dark Matter Lab (DMLab—astroparticle physics), involving the National Institute of Nuclear and Particle Physics (IN2P3, CNRS) and the Laboratory of Subatomic Physics and Cosmology (LPSC, UGA).
  • The international research project “Superconductivity: from materials to device applications” (SupraDevMat), involving the LPMMC, the LNCMI, and the G2ELab.
  • the Neutrino International Research Network (IRN), involving IN2P3, CNRS, and the CEA.
