The "Physics, Engineering, Materials" (PEM) Research Cluster

This cluster conducts research in the fields of physics and nanoscience, mechanics, electronics, electrical engineering, materials science, process engineering, and engineering and manufacturing sciences. This research has implications for areas of significant societal importance, such as health, the energy transition, sustainability, industrial renewal, and the information and communication society.

Strategic Priorities

  • Nanoscience and nanotechnology encompass a range of topics dealing with objects at the nanoscale.
  • Materials, structures, and systems in the field of materials science and engineering.
  • Condensed matter physics, which studies the electronic, magnetic, thermal, optical, and/or structural properties of systems composed of a large number of interacting particles.
  • Microelectronics, microsystems, and electrical engineering, which bring together scientific issues related to electrical energy and data.
  • Mechanics, processes, and heat and mass transfer cover a broad scientific and technical field, ranging from the mechanical properties of matter—whether solid or fluid—to its application in systems, process engineering, and environmental engineering.
  • Biophysics and bioengineering, which explore the mechanical, physicochemical, structural, and statistical properties of biological matter.
