Launched in 1997, the partnership between the University of Tsukuba and the University of Grenoble Alpes (UGA) has exceeded its initial goals for student mobility, leading to the creation of dual degree programs and the development of significant scientific initiatives, including a joint research laboratory with Air Liquide and the CNRS.
The inclusion of this partnership in [...], opens up new opportunities.
the Campus in Campus (CiC) Alliance, which brings together a dozen prestigious universities from around the world.
As part of a long-term commitment, this partnership between the two universities is based on a joint strategic plan (currently in effect for the 2021–2024 period) to carry out structured initiatives.
In the field of education
The University of Tsukuba and UGA have expanded their academic cooperation, notably through:
- student exchange programs, both incoming and outgoing,
- lectures and classes taught by UGA faculty members in Tsukuba,
- the participation of UGA's Risk Graduate School in the University of Tsukuba Consortium, which focuses on promoting research and education on resilience.
The following programs are offered:
- Joint thesis on all research topics at UGA and the University of Tsukuba.
- Dual master's degree in materials science and applied physics.
In the field of research
In terms of scientific cooperation, research activities are thriving in the fields of high-energy physics, solid-state physics, microelectronics, and biochemistry.
These collaborations are driven by numerous jointly supervised doctoral students (8 theses in progress and 7 graduates since 2018) and have resulted in more than 25 scientific publications per year since 2017.
A joint research unit was launched in Tsukuba in 2015, which in 2022 became the Franco-Japanese Laboratory for Semiconductor Physics and Technology (J-FAST), an international research laboratory of the CNRS in collaboration with Air Liquide.
General Framework and Context
To maintain the partnership between the University of Tsukuba and theUniversité Grenoble Alpes, a strategic committee has been established. It brings together experts from both institutions and monitors the progress of the working groups set up to address specific topics.
Regular visits by the presidents, vice presidents, faculty members, and administrative staff of these universities to joint conferences and workshops help foster relationships while embedding the partnership within a regional strategy carried out jointly with the cities of Grenoble and Tsukuba and their metropolitan areas.
In addition, the partnership between the University of Tsukuba and UGA was part of a broader initiative in 2017, when the two parties signed an agreement with a dozen leading universities around the world to create
The Campus in Campus (CiC) International Alliance. The initiative aims to share research and educational resources, increase student mobility—particularly through new joint degree programs—and develop an online course catalog (the "Course Jukebox" system).
