Risk Management: Managing Risk, from Data to People

Explore risk management as a complex system where technological expertise meets human analysis.
Université Grenoble Alpes has become a leading example in risk management because it has successfully transformed the geographical vulnerability of its territory—a basin surrounded by steep mountains—into an open-air laboratory for innovation.

A unique research ecosystem

  • The Institute of Earth Sciences and the Institute of Environmental Geosciences
Thanks to these laboratories, Grenoble is at the forefront of modeling earthquakes, avalanches, and floods.
  • Risk Institute
This research program brings together more than 15 laboratories, ranging from mathematics to psychology to economics. It studies not only hazards (disasters) but also the resilience of populations and the associated financial risks.
  • Institute for Major Risks (IRMa)
The geographical proximity of the Université Grenoble Alpes to the IRMa, a national reference organization based in Grenoble, creates a direct bridge between students and operational professionals (firefighters, mayors, prefectures). Training programs are thus continually updated based on feedback from the field.

Specialized Training Programs

  • Polytech Grenoble - Risk Management Specialization
It is one of the few schools in France that trains engineers capable of simultaneously managing industrial (fire, explosion), environmental, and occupational health risks.
  • Graduate School @UGA - Risk
Program This master’s program allows students to work on interdisciplinary projects from the very start of their studies, preparing them to become risk managers capable of collaborating with experts from all fields.
