Performance Lab

Capturing the Subtle

Designed as an international platform, the Performance Lab project brings together a community of researchers focused on contemporary issues linking the body, society, and technology. The project also aims to transform the way research is conceived and conducted at the University of Grenoble Alpes by developing new methodologies inspired by Anglo-Saxon models of “performance as research” (PAR), research-creation, and practice-based or practice-informed creation and experimentation.

The Issues

The community’s goal is to conduct cutting-edge research in the fields of performance, digital documentation, tools for analyzing the body in motion, and tangible and intangible heritage. The close collaborations that will be established with local nonprofit and cultural partners, as well as with the professional arts community at the national and international levels, will also lead to the creation of analytical and documentation tools that can be applied to the fields of the performing arts and the social sciences.

Interdisciplinarity

The project is inherently interdisciplinary because it brings together joint perspectives on experimentation and analysis, as well as on the interactions of bodies in motion, by creating synergy among the fields of the performing arts, geography, and computer science.

The site's structure...

Performance Lab aims to bring about a profound transformation of the practical and theoretical approaches to research at the University of Grenoble Alpes in the fields of the performing arts, geography, and computer science. The project is based on a four-level dynamic of openness among: scientific disciplines; representational and non-representational research; and academic and non-academic institutions on an international scale.

... and its international visibility

To establish a new multidisciplinary ecosystem within the University of Grenoble Alpes that can contribute to the latest advancements in the fields of “Performance as Research” and “Performance Studies” at the international level, while highlighting the expertise offered by the University of Grenoble Alpes at the intersection of research on the body, society, and technology.

The university will be recognized for its innovations:

  • Epistemological and methodological, through an analysis of how interdisciplinarity functions,
  • Educational thanks to the project members’ commitment to master’s and doctoral programs that build upon and expand their scientific and artistic practices and findings,
  • Social, thanks to the renewal of the forms of participation developed in the project,
  • Local in nature, thanks to its long-standing presence in the communities participating in the project and the relationships it has built with regional cultural stakeholders,
  • Creative, featuring new artistic forms from PAR.
