Sports, Performance, Health

Sports and physical activity are major areas of scientific study, serving both as unique models for the advancement of knowledge and as relevant fields of application across several scientific disciplines, with the aim of addressing major societal challenges (health, environment, economy).
This project aims to bring together key academic, technological, and socio-economic stakeholders in the field of sports and physical activity in the Grenoble region to develop an integrated approach to human movement within its environment. Based on specific case studies, the goal is to demonstrate the scientific and societal impact of a multifactorial, interdisciplinary, in situ, and longitudinal approach—one that draws on recent technological and methodological advances—capable of providing new theoretical and practical insights into athletic performance and physical activity for the well-being and health of all.

The Issues

Sports and physical activity are major health, sociocultural, and economic issues in Western societies. There is substantial evidence of their benefits for health and well-being (physical activity reduces the risk of mortality by 30%, for example) and of the risks associated with sedentary behaviors, which constitute a true global epidemic. In France, 95% of the adult population is reportedly at risk of health problems due to a lack of physical activity. Furthermore, high-level competitive sports serve as a showcase thanks to media coverage of major national and international competitions, and represent a key driver of economic development, particularly for the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, which leads France’s outdoor sports industry.

Interdisciplinarity

The project aims to address these challenges and move beyond current siloed and fragmented approaches by adopting an ambitious and original interdisciplinary approach: (1) by providing a multidimensional physical, psychosocial, and sociological assessment to implement individualized interventions, (2) by moving beyond the laboratory to address the complexity of real-world conditions in sports and physical activity, (3) by modeling and predicting potential improvements in health status and athletic performance, and (4) by facilitating knowledge transfer and practical innovations.

A Transformative Project

Scientific studies are needed to optimize human movement based on effective training programs for physical activity and sports that aim to maximize physical and psychosocial capabilities for the purposes of health and performance. This poses several scientific and technological challenges that are common to the optimization of physical activity and athletic performance for health.

A national and international reach

This project aims to position the Université Grenoble Alpes as a major player in the field, increasing its visibility particularly among national structures and authorities (e.g., the French National Sports Agency), as well as internationally through contributions to key institutions in the field (e.g., international educational and medical societies, international sports federations, International Olympic Committee).

To increase the visibility of the Grenoble site

This project aims both to highlight the excellence of research in Grenoble at the national and international levels and to help define future applications and directions in technology, economics, health, and education in the fields of sports and physical activity.
