CerCoG@UGA

From Neurons to Collective Cognition: The Functioning and Dysfunction of the Brain and Human Cognition
CerCoG@UGA (formerly NeuroCoG) is an intensive, structured, interdisciplinary research and collaboration program focused on the neurocognitive foundations and functional principles of human intelligence. It examines behavioral, cognitive, and brain-level functioning and dysfunction from a broad perspective, ranging from neurons and neural networks to cognitive functions and social interactions.

The Issues

CerCoG@UGA focuses on ambitious scientific questions concerning cognitive functions (perception, action, language, memory, attention, learning), the cognitive foundations of social interactions, brain disorders, the underlying neural processes (cells and networks), and the associated diagnostic and therapeutic challenges; with implications for health and disability, education, cognitive technologies, and public policy.

Interdisciplinarity

CerCoG@UGA brings together researchers, faculty members, engineers, and clinicians who work in teams and laboratories in the fields of psychology, neuroscience, biology, chemistry, neurotechnology, language sciences, philosophy, engineering, mathematics, computer science, and education—all from an interdisciplinary perspective that is essential for understanding the infinitely complex systems of the brain and human cognition.

A Transformative Project

CerCoG@UGA’s broad interdisciplinary scope will make it possible to connect and coordinate teams from the fields of information science, life sciences, and the humanities and social sciences across all aspects of brain and cognition research, within a wide range of interactions, offering a unique perspective “from the cell to social interactions.”

A national and international reach

Such a broad spectrum of interdisciplinary interactions, focused on the study of all aspects of the functioning and dysfunction of the brain and cognition, is a key feature of the project that gives CerCoG@UGA a unique position in France and few equivalents worldwide.

To increase the visibility of the Grenoble site

Through this project—which brings together information sciences, life sciences, and the humanities and social sciences around coordinated scientific objectives and clear societal challenges, and which relies heavily on shared research platforms that will enable effective research coordination and strengthen collaborations—the Grenoble campus will gain a leading position in the fields of neuroscience and cognitive science.
