Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the primary greenhouse gas emitted by human activities and thus contributes significantly to climate change. DefiCO2 aims to tackle this societal challenge. Through interdisciplinary research, the goal is to capture and utilize atmospheric CO2 to produce fuels or chemicals using carbon-free energy sources. This project also aims to contribute to the development of a circular economy that balances economic, social, and environmental impacts.
The Issues
CO2 is the primary greenhouse gas contributing to global warming. Reducing its concentration in the atmosphere is a major challenge for our society. CO2 capture and utilization is one of the three proposed courses of action. This solution is not currently being implemented because the processes are energy-intensive, the technologies are underdeveloped, and there is a lack of socio-economic vision surrounding these processes.
Interdisciplinarity
DefiCO2 was formed around an interdisciplinary team spanning the fields of biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, socio-economic sciences, socio-technological sciences, and the humanities and social sciences. The organization and governance of the DefiCO2 consortium—comprising 13 laboratories, involving 5 UGA research clusters, 4 LabEx programs, the EUR-CBH, and industrial partners—are designed to foster optimal synergy.
A Transformative Project
Capturing and using atmospheric CO2 to produce fuels or basic chemicals using carbon-free energy sources represents a significant scientific challenge. DefiCO2 will lead to breakthrough solutions and emerging technologies through a shared vision among scientists with diverse areas of expertise. The involvement of researchers in socio-economic sciences will enhance our understanding of the political and economic issues associated with CO2 capture.
A national and international reach
By organizing and funding the local community across various disciplines, DefiCO2 will increase the visibility of our Grenoble community at the national level. With this in mind, the few teams already identified in PEPR projects related to this project’s focus will serve as ambassadors to promote the research conducted at UGA and help other UGA researchers establish connections with the French community. A significant component will also be developed to initiate and strengthen international collaborations, thereby facilitating the implementation of European programs.
To increase the visibility of the Grenoble site
This project, as conceived, will serve as a springboard for strengthening interactions with local industry stakeholders and will place UGA at the forefront of the national and European stage in the field of carbon cycle closure. DefiCO2—and, through this project, UGA—also aims to influence the national debate on the link between climate change and the energy sector, as well as on tax policies designed to promote these green technologies for a circular economy.
