OTE

Open and Participatory Science in Support of the Energy Transition - Energy Transition Observatory (OTE)
The OTE program (formerly Eco-SESA) aims to observe and understand the potential for change and its social, technical, material, and environmental drivers—from the individual to the collective level—as well as its local and global impacts, in order to achieve a decarbonized energy transition that is Efficient, Moderate, Sustainable, Desirable, and Flexible.

The Issues

The OTE's goal is to advance knowledge in the following three areas:
(i) Integrate the logic of a genuine energy transition into the behavior of stakeholders at the individual, collective, institutional, and organizational levels,
(ii) Develop the technologies of the future, as well as the materials and components used at all stages of production/conversion, transportation, and consumption in energy systems, regardless of their scale—whether local or national,
(iii) Develop innovative public policies to achieve the objectives.

Interdisciplinarity

OTE brings together 18 laboratories—ranging from the humanities and social sciences, material sciences and engineering, and environmental sciences to law and history—to develop a multidisciplinary approach to energy transition across the UGA campus. By bringing together activities under an interdisciplinary program organized into six research areas, the OTE project unifies and ensures the long-term sustainability of multi- and interdisciplinary activities at the Grenoble campus.

A Transformative Project

OTE’s research approach addresses the complexity of the energy transition by intertwining the complexity of material, physical, and energy systems with the complexity of the actors involved, their social, economic, and legal interrelationships, and environmental constraints.

A national and international reach

The various focus areas of the OTE align with the UGA’s strategy through the institution’s PEPR projects, whether they are focused on acceleration (Advanced Technologies for Energy Systems, Solutions for Sustainable Cities and Innovative Buildings, Digitalization and Decarbonization of Mobility) or exploration (Materials of the Future, Behaviors, Decisions, and Intelligence).

To increase the visibility of the Grenoble site

The OTE is developing improved tools for data capture and sharing, not only within the framework of the program but also for researchers from various national communities. Indeed, there is a major scientific need for reliable, relevant, and robust analyses, which can only be met if an ambitious system for collecting and sharing data on the socio-technical system is in place, in line with the principles of open science.
