A collective path toward more sustainable and responsible travel
Sustainable Development
As part of its environmental transformation, the University ofUniversité Grenoble Alpes s (UGA) is implementing a sustainable mobility plan. This strategic document sets a clear path for reducing the carbon footprint associated with travel, which currently accounts for more than 20 percent of the institution’s greenhouse gas emissions.
The result of a collaborative effort involving university departments, services, and local partners, this plan aims to support changes in the mobility habits of staff and students, while improving accessibility, quality of life, and the UGA’s environmental leadership.
A key objective: to help achieve the UGA’s overall goal: a 35% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 (Reference 2022), by addressing all travel related to university activities.
10 Commitments to Transform Mobility for the Long Term
Promoting carpooling
Reducing solo driving and individual car use for commutes between home and work or home and school by facilitating connections, providing dedicated infrastructure, and fostering carpooling communities.
Encouraging Active Mobility
Promote walking, biking, and other active modes of transportation through financial assistance, safe facilities, repair services, and appropriate infrastructure across all campuses.
Improving Public Transportation Use
Prioritize action at locations where the modal shift is still insufficient, in collaboration with mobility planning authorities, to improve service, information, and support for users.
Adapting organizational structures to manage commuting
Better distribute traffic flows through telework, adjusted schedules, and experimentation with new teaching methods, in order to limit peak ridership and non-essential travel.
Managing and Optimizing Business Travel
Improve the tracking, review, and streamlining of business trips by incorporating carbon footprint data into management tools and fostering a shared culture of responsible travel.
Reduce the use of carbon-intensive modes of transportation for business trips
Prioritize rail travel and alternatives to air travel and driving, update business travel policies, and encourage carpooling for business trips.
Streamline and make the vehicle fleet more environmentally friendly
Reduce the size of the fleet, increase vehicle sharing, and accelerate the transition to low-emission vehicles, in compliance with regulatory requirements.
Developing carbon-free mobility infrastructure
Increase the number of secure bicycle parking spaces, install electric vehicle charging stations, and improve facilities that support alternative modes of transportation at all sites.
Decarbonizing International Student Travel
Reducing air travel, raising awareness of carbon impacts, and implementing financial incentives to promote more sustainable modes of transportation.
Adapting Study-Related Travel in France
Limit the environmental impact of internships, work-study programs, and field trips by promoting accessibility via public transportation and incorporating sustainability criteria into procedures.
This sustainable mobility plan involves the entire university community. It sets forth a bold goal: to make UGA a responsible, exemplary university that plays an active role in the ecological transition.
