Accelerating the Transition to Sustainable, Resilient, and Exemplary Campuses
Sustainable Development
The University ofUniversité Grenoble Alpes s (UGA) has adopted an energy and building efficiency plan to sustainably reduce its energy consumption and carbon footprint and to adapt its facilities to address climate challenges.
Developed through a collaborative process, in close coordination with the constituent institutions and relevant administrative departments, this plan sets a clear course for balancing energy efficiency, building usability, and working and learning conditions.
8 commitments structured around 3 areas of action
Take technical measures
Regulate the use of equipment and infrastructure
Control energy consumption by managing heating, air conditioning, lighting, and digital equipment, and by establishing clear, shared rules for the entire institution.
Maintain a high level of operational efficiency and optimize management
Strengthen preventive maintenance, modernize equipment, and roll out energy management tools to monitor, analyze, and reduce energy consumption on a building-by-building basis.
Renovating and Adapting Our Heritage
Accelerate energy-efficient building renovations, improve thermal comfort in both summer and winter, and incorporate the principles of sustainability and the circular economy into real estate projects.
Increase the share of renewable and recovered energy
Decarbonize heating, expand solar power, and increase the energy self-sufficiency of sites through local production and self-consumption.
Changing Habits
Engaging the university community in sustainability
Raise awareness among all staff and students, encourage eco-friendly practices, assist departments in analyzing their consumption, and promote collective initiatives.
Taking Action on the Organization
Managing and Optimizing Space Utilization
Making better use of existing buildings, sharing spaces, combating underutilization, and ensuring the university adopts a policy of land efficiency.
Adjust work and study schedules
Adapt the organization of activities and building hours to address energy and climate-related constraints, particularly during periods of extreme heat or cold.
Structure and support the “ ” initiative
Strengthen governance, share energy data, equip decision-makers with the necessary tools, and provide long-term support to the university community as it works to reduce energy consumption.
With this plan, the UGA reaffirms its commitment to significantly reducing the energy and carbon footprint of its facilities, while improving the resilience of its campuses and the quality of life for their users. The plan engages the entire university community in a gradual, guided, and evaluated process aimed at creating a more sustainable, responsible university that is fully committed to the ecological transition.
