A Commitment to Open, Responsible, and High-Impact Science
The University ofUniversité Grenoble Alpes s (UGA) has adopted a master plan for research data and code to support the transformation of scientific practices and enable the entire academic community to better utilize, share, and leverage research data, code, and software.
As part of a national and international open science initiative, this plan is based on the FAIR principles ("as open as possible, as closed as necessary") and addresses a major challenge: improving the effectiveness, reproducibility, and impact of research, while complying with regulatory, ethical, and environmental frameworks.
This strategic document aims to create a research environment conducive to data-driven approaches, in line with the national plan for open science, European initiatives (EOSC), and UGA’s involvement in major international open science networks.
4 Challenges in Organizing Collective Action
Strengthen governance and coordination among stakeholders
Consolidate networks of data and open science liaisons, improve the flow of information, and strengthen governance to make the data and code strategy more transparent, effective, and widely adopted across the institution.
Ensure responsible, compliant, and ethical practices
Support researchers in complying with regulatory frameworks (GDPR, ethics, scientific integrity), promote controlled data openness, and incorporate an environmentally responsible approach into data management, storage, and archiving.
Improve support throughout the data and code lifecycle
Offer personalized support, from project planning through archiving, by leveraging the Grenoble Alpes Data Unit and on-site infrastructure (storage, computing, AI, collaborative tools), and by strengthening services for laboratories and doctoral students.
Expand open-access publications and publishing
Support open archives, encourage alternative publishing models, strengthen support for open-access publishing, and foster links between publications, data, and code to improve the visibility and reproducibility of research.
This master plan sets forth a clear goal: to make UGA a leading player in open science by balancing scientific excellence, social responsibility, and open access to knowledge. It commits the university to a long-term effort to organize its services, infrastructure, and practices in a way that supports more transparent, collaborative, and impactful research.
