Training in Power Electronics for Electric Vehicles (FOREP-Vé2030)
Skills and Careers of the Future
Training
The FOREP-Vé2030 project addresses the growing need for skills related to the development of power electronics for electric vehicles, a strategic field for supporting the decarbonization of mobility and France’s reindustrialization.
Topic:
Electronics, electric vehicles
FOREP-Vé2030 is a national project led by the Campus des métiers et des qualifications d'excellence des industries de la mobilité – Normandie as part of France 2030 – Skills and Professions of the Future (AMI CMA). It addresses the growing need for skills related to the development of power electronics for electric vehicles, a strategic field for supporting the decarbonization of mobility and France’s reindustrialization.
The project brings together a broad consortium of automotive industry players, training institutions, research organizations, professional associations, and skills development bodies to develop a training program covering the entire value chain, from the design to the maintenance of power electronics systems.
Background and Issues
The rise of electric vehicles is profoundly transforming the automotive industry. Manufacturers must develop power electronics systems that are increasingly efficient, reliable, and competitive, while adapting their production tools.
This development is creating new skill requirements—from the design of power converters to their manufacturing, maintenance, and repairability—to which the FOREP-Vé2030 project provides a coordinated response involving stakeholders from both the education and industry sectors.
France 2030 Goal
Decarbonization of industry, transition to electric mobility, and strengthening of France's industrial sovereignty.
Main Areas of Focus
The project is developing a range of career-oriented training programs for students, engineering students, employees, and job seekers, covering educational levels from two years after high school through eight years after high school. It calls for the creation of new programs, the modernization of existing curricula, and outreach initiatives to enhance the sector’s appeal.
The training programs are structured around three areas of skills development:
Design:
Development of training courses focused on power converter design and new technologies in embedded electronics.
Production:
Development of learning paths focused on industrial processes, production resources, and manufacturing methods in power electronics.
Repairability:
Development of training courses on the diagnosis, maintenance, and repairability of electronic systems in electric vehicles.
In addition, a cross-cutting focus "Attractiveness" aims to promote careers and training programs in power electronics among middle school students, high school students, college students, job seekers, and the general public, in order to meet the industry’s hiring needs.
For the Université Grenoble Alpes, the FOREP-Vé2030 project supports the evolution of training programs at IUT1 and Grenoble INP - Ense³ to strengthen skills related to power electronics applied to electric vehicles.
At IUT1, this will result in a more in-depth exploration of the BUT curriculum focused on the challenges of electric mobility, particularly power electronics for motors, charging, and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), as well as the development of motor test benches for electric micromobility and related educational resources.
At Grenoble INP - Ense³, the project will lead to the creation of new hands-on courses in power electronics—particularly those focused on battery-charging applications—in order to adapt engineering programs to technological advancements in the automotive industry.
